Overview

THE TEAM

TFH will send one Polar Bears team consisting of a maximum of 16 female athletes and minimum of 14 athletes to Simi Valley, California (1.5 hours north of Los Angeles International Airport) for four days to compete in the Women's Competitive Division of the California Cup Field Hockey Tournament.

OBJECTIVE

Train with the top coach in Canada and play in one of the most competitive club tournaments in North America. Play against top American University teams, Argentinian Club teams, and Mexican teams as you battle to win the tournament and then $5000 US Dollar Cash Prize (if won - to be split by the team).

THE COACH

Total Field Hockey has partnered up with Shiaz Virjee to offer our athletes the best coach available in Canada as they prepare for the Tour and develop as athletes.

  • Shiaz coached and qualified the Canadian National Men's Team to the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games
  • Coached Canada to Gold at 1999 Pan-America Games (Winnipeg)
  • Shiaz holds the certification of FIH Grade 1 Coaching Position (the highest coaching position awarded by the FIH to only a select few coaches)
  • Canadian Men's National Team Coach from 1994 - 2000
  • Shiaz is currently the head coach of the University of British Columbia Men's team

 

Shiaz Virjee is a top coach, with excellent credentials and results who has coached athletes and teams to success in both domestic and international competition. Shiaz has a tremendous passion for field hockey with an emphasis on high performance. His athletes acquire excellent skills and develop into a cohesive, competitive unit ready to achieve success. Shiaz has a systematic approach to develop skills and create an environment that nurtures athletes. He is also very results oriented with a motto of "no excuses get the results". His uncompromising methods helped Canada to secure best ever results internationally. He has excellent knowledge of the game and is able to analyze the game tactics and set plays for the advantage of his team.

TRAINING SCHEDULE

In order to find success you must first and train hard. It is our expectations that everyone who makes the Polar Bears team commits to our training schedule.

It is our hope to attract the best athletes from throughout British Columbia and make it as easy as possible for the entire team to get together to train.

Training sessions will be held in the Lower Mainland. We will assist all athletes travelling from outside the Lower Mainland (Vancouver Island, Interior etc.) find billeting with local families.

Tour places are filled with preference going to past Polar Bears Alumni, then to new applicants.

THE TOUR AT A GLANCE

The California Tour offers field hockey athletes an opportunity to compete and enjoy the warm weather that California has to offer. There is plenty of hockey to be played throughout the tournament. We will have time to relax around the pool, go shopping, and enjoy each other's company.

PROPOSED TRAVEL PLAN

  • Thursday Afternoon: Depart Vancouver to Los Angeles International Airport (LAX)
  • Thursday Night: Drive to our hotel in Simi Valley (1.5 hrs North of LAX)
  • Friday: Tournament Starts
  • Saturday: Tournament & Shopping
  • Sunday: Tournament & Relaxing Time
  • Monday Morning: Tournament
  • Monday Afternoon: Venice Beach
  • Monday Evening: Depart LAX to Vancouver



THE TOURNAMENT

The California Cup Field Hockey Tournament is one of the largest field hockey tournaments in North America! It has been running for 35 years strong and continues to grow in popularity.

Each year a maximum of ten Woman's Competitive teams that take part in this tournament from throughout North America. The games consist of two 25-minute halves with brief 5 minute intermission in between each half. Each team is placed into a group of 5 and plays round-robin matches over the Saturday and Sunday of the tournament. The teams are seeded accordingly and then playoff for final tournament positioning.

The matches are played on grass at Moorpark College. The tournament atmosphere is nothing short of fantastic. The California Cup Tournament buzzes with enormous amount of energy thanks to equipment vendors, food vendors, and the hundreds of people that participate in the more than 9 divisions for men and women.
