Overview

?Fall Field Hockey ? A Brief History ?
The current junior league that is run during spring each year provides a good opportunity for field hockey development. However, this season is short and stops just as athletes are beginning to develop their sills ? 3 months is not enough time for sustained development of motor learning skills at this formative age. Field Hockey is a complex sport requiring fitness & hand-eye coordination. ?
Research has shown that young athletes need 15,000 touches with the stick and ball to develop the skills at a high level. In order to take the athlete development to the next level and get more touches with the stick & ball, we are planning a Futures League that runs in the fall beginning in September of 2011. ?
There is no organized competitive hockey for either female or male junior players during the fall time except for some juniors who can opt to play in the women?s league (must be 14 years of age to play). Total Field Hockey has decided to organize a Futures League ? a junior hockey seven (including goalies) a-side league to further encourage juniors to develop and enjoy field hockey throughout the winter. ? ?

Futures League - What Is It?
The Futures League will be a seven a-side hockey league that follows the widely popular Rugby Seven?s model?that has also has been previously used in field hockey. A similar league is also in place at the University of Western Australia in Perth and in Vancouver in the Spring (our Spring Hockey League). The JFH7?S would be played on ? a field, 7v7 with modified rules. ? Divisions (each division will have a maximum of 6 teams comprised of no-minimum number of players ? club teams can determine their squad numbers)
