TFH is committed to the continuous growth and development of field hockey athletes through a balanced program of on field and off field training. Our program seeks to achieve the highest level of performance, learning, and enjoyment for each individual athlete.
Vision Statement:
TFH seeks to create a balanced learning environment between teaching physical, technical, and tactical skills that will enable our athletes to achieve their desired levels of performance. TFH coaches recognize that each athlete develops skills at a different pace, and we understand that long-term commitment to correct training and skill development is essential to develop atheletes to their greatest ability. TFH not only hopes to create successful athletes, but successful people.
Shiaz Virjee
Shiaz Virjee has extensive experience coaching Men and Women athletes at the junior and senior level. Having coached at the club, provincial, university and National Team level in Canada and internationally.
Shiaz coached the Canadian Mens Team for about 7 years during that time, he coached Canada at many regional and world class events including Pan Am Games (Gold Medal), Australia Gold Cup (1st Place), Commonwealth Games, World Cup and Olympic Games.The Canadian Mens Team achieved its best every world class ranking with Shiaz as the coach at the World Cup when it placed 8th.
Shiaz was also named the coach of the World Team by the FIH in 1999
He is now in his 9th year at UBC where he continues to coach the UBC Mens Field Hockey Team which has had unrivalled success in the local competition and develops players for the National Mens Program. From current student ranks, UBC has 9 Senior National Squad and 2 Junior National Squad athletes. Recent players from UBC on the National Team includeScott Tupper, Mark Pearson, Philip Wright, Richard Hildreth, David Carter.
Shiaz has a history of developing top athletes locally and internationally.
Over the past 2 years, Shiaz has also coached the Belarus Womens National Team at the Champions Challenge (Russia) and EuroHockey
Tournament (Italy). The work in Belarus included development of the athletes and coaches for the High Performance programs. A recent success and product of the development program has been the Under 21 Womens Team winning the European Junior Womens Indoor Championship. A number of these athletes came through the youth program and the coach and staff were part of the coaching development and mentoring program. The Senior Womens Team has also qualified for the Indoor World Cup.
Shiaz holds one of the top qualifications from the FIH and has conducted coaching courses in Europe, Asia, Africa and the Americas. He is continually being asked to mentor coaches by FIH.
Andrew Schouten
Andrew Schouten is an elite field hockey coach, manager and player. Andrew has coached Provincially in British Columbia and has played Provincially at the National Championships. He continues to coach club hockey and play top-level club hockey with the Vancouver Hawks. Andrew also played University field Hockey at the University of British Columbia while earning his bachelors degree.
Andrew is currently the Mens National Team Manager for the Canadian Team joining the team at the recent FIH World Cup and Commonwealth Games (both in Delhi, India).
Andrew has extensive coaching and playing experience. He has coached numerous Club Teams and has won two Senior High School Championships with Crofton House School (Vancouver).
Andrew has been organizing International Tours for Total Field Hockey for the past seven years. He has organized and coached Teams to destinations including New Zealand, Australia, Holland, and California. Andrews strength lies in communicating with both parents and athletes and putting together World Class Tours that exceed the expectations of their participants
